Silence Booth 2014 is a research project started from December last year, which constantly questions the boundary between art and the activism. Through the series of events happening in Korea recently, the artist started to ponder on his activity; social activity within the category of art, and art through social activity, these dual activities. With an ultimate theme of boundary between activism and art, he carries out the project of making a diagnosis of the direction of art/behaviorism in Korean and furthermore, East-Asian society with the medium of dialogue. Through the research, the artist tries conversation with those who live a kind of life that he seeks to follow ultimately, and establishes the methodology that exists commonly among them.

Whether direct or indirect, with those six interviewees Bonghak Meang, Seongyoung Lim, Mixrice, Sungjin Jang, Seoyun Choi, Hahn Vad who share the same thought as Hwang Kim and live a life realizing scholarstic, behavioral and artistic life, he tries to converse and realize this work. Through the form of ‘dialogue’ he reveals their life, and their works are passed down, both of which cannot, of course, be said to be an answer to the reality he is concerned about. The conversation which does not require the answer nor argue for participation of critical movement wholly contains his philosophy of critical design which says ‘let as many as possible think’.

This research project is realized through the form of ‘conversation’ and will exist as an archive itself. Also, through the event of borrowing ‘human library’, it will invite the main participants of conversation to the exhibition space. The audience will be able to go beyond just listening to a conversation between the artist and the interviewees, but participate in the process of ‘conversation’ with the interviewees, through which we can expect the flow of information and independent thinking.

이번 리서치는 스스로 중요한 시기에, 중요한 사람들이 함께 했던, 중요한 프로젝트 임에 틀림이 없다. 리서치 참여자 들과 스텝들은 오랜 기간동안 머리를 맞대고 동시대의 예술적, 사회적 쟁점 들에 대해서 이야기 했다. 과거의 예술적, 사회적 시스템을 수용 하면서도 정반합 적으로 반발하고자 하는 적당히 젊은 이들의 발언과 텍스트 들에서 강한 동지 의식을 느꼈다. 서문을 쓰는 오늘은 2차 세계대전이 공식적으로 끝난 날로, 내가 살고 있는 네덜란드 암스테르담 및 유럽 국가들에서는 조촐한 기념 행사들이 열리고 있다. 2차 세계대전 이후로 1945년 부터 69년 동안 세계는 평화로운 세월을 보내고 있기는 하지만, 아직 인류가 해결해야 할 문제들은 산재해 있어 보인다. 그 사이 한국에서는 세월호가 침몰하고, 아무것도 알지 못하는 어린 생명들이 덧 없이 목숨을 잃었다. 너무도 애통한 일이 아닐 수 없다.

유구한 시간의 흐름 속에 잠깐 세상에 머물다 가는 한 인간의 존재에 불과한 나로서 원대하게 이 세상을 바꾸고 싶다기보다, 내 삶을 살아가는 동안 어떻게 무엇을 하며 살아가야 하느냐는 본질적인 질문을 다시 한 번 상기 시켜주는 사건이었다. 즉, 가치 있는 일을 하다 죽고 싶은 것이다. 만약 특정인이 진정한 가치를 고민하고 추구한다면, 그것이 예술적 가치이든, 사회적 가치이든, 정치적 가치이든, 그 행위와 노력은 박수 받아 마땅하다고 생각한다. 내가 이번 리서치에서 이야기하고자 하는 것도 결국은 같은 맥락에서 시작되는 것을 다시 한 번 강조하고 싶다.

나는 개인적으로 스스로 가치를 “긍정적인 변화”라고 정의하고자 한다. 이 세상은 끊임없이 변화하고 있고, 정체는 곧 죽음을 의미한다. 인간의 삶은 변화하는 에너지로서 존재한다. 무엇인가 변화하고, 일어나고, 희망을 품을 수 있을 때 사회의 구성원들은 행복을 느낀다. 인간의 물질 문명은 이제 변화의 단계에 왔다고 판단되어 진다. 처절한 고민에 의해 그 변화가 긍정적인 방향으로 흐를 수 있게 방향성을 제시하는 것이 중요하다.

내가 리서치에서 하고자 했던 것은 직접적이든, 간접적이든 나와 동일한 생각을 가지고 학술적, 행동적, 예술적 행위를 하는 사람들을 만나 앞으로 방향성을 조망 해보는 것이었다. 이 수행을 앞으로 있을 차기 작업의 방법론을 정립하는 행위로 정의할 수도 있다. 지난 2013년 12월과 2월에는 일본에서, 이번 달 초(2014년 3월)부터는 같은 리서치를 한국에서 진행하고 있다. 리서치는 스스로 아카이브로 존재할 뿐만 아니라, 적극적인 활용과 배포를 통해 공유될 예정이다. 아직은 미완성인 리서치를 계속하며, 리서치가 어떻게 긍정적인 플랫폼으로 변형 가능할지 기대를 품어 본다.
